Afritrex - The Trailblazer Challenge
African women walk on average 26 miles a week to collect water to provide for their families. The walk is arduous, in many places it is dangerous and everywhere it removes the centre of the community for hours each day.
This then is the problem; there are solutions a plenty, wells can be bored, rivers diverted and complex irrigation systems can be laid down, but a high cost means that few communities can enjoy such luxuries and most still live along way from the nearest water supply.
The brief: To design and produce a versatile bicycle trailer capable of carrying 100 litres of water.
The trailer must be durable and as simple as possible. It must be able to survive rugged terrain, constant use and be repairable with the most basic tools. Ideally a rigid welded frame with bolt or clip on adaptations. Less is definitely more.
We’ll build a number of examples of this type of trailer at workshops we’ll setup during our trip utilising spare parts and old bike frames we find on our travels. Where these workshops take place will be decided as we travel through the continent, who they will benefit will be decided by our interaction with the communities, all we know is that we’ll leave a few individuals with an asset which will benefit them and their family.
